Polyphony is a type of musical texture consisting of two or more simultaneous lines of independent melody.
This contrasts with musical textures with just one voice with one dominant melodic voice accompanied by chords.
It usually refers to music from the Mediaeval or Renaissance periods.
The more developed forms of the Baroque period, such as the Fugue, are usually referred to as Counterpoint.
