” Those dramatic qualities were abundant in the ringing clarity of the tenor Toby Ward’s narration as the Evangelist and the nobility of bass baritone Phil Wilcox as Jesus. A broad spectrum of colours drawn by Alex Woodrow from the forty blended voices of St Peter’s Singers was, at times breathtaking. The focused energy of these voices was at its most chilling as a fanatical mob demanding the crucifixion of Jesus.”

“As to be expected, Orchestra of Opera North and St Peter’s Singers deliver the goods with ease and are truly terrific in bringing the narrative into a new and perfect realm.”

What is historically-informed performance? 🎶 🎻 🎺 What is historically-informed performance? 🎶 🎻 🎺

Historically-informed performance aims to recreate the musical sounds of different periods, using instruments dating from the time, and reviving musical techniques and styles which were left behind as musical technology progressed. This allows music fans now to hear the music as its composers may have intended or expected it to sound.

We're delighted to be joining forces with the fantastic 18th Century Sinfonia - specialists in the music of this era- for our performance of J S Bach’s Christmas Oratorio this Saturday!

Be sure to join us for a unique opportunity to hear their period instruments up close, and experience the music of Bach as you may never have heard it before! 🎵

What a day we had yesterday! 🤩 We filled Leeds Mi What a day we had yesterday! 🤩

We filled Leeds Minster to the rafters with music, for a full day of celebration in memory of Dr Simon Lindley, an inspirational musician and friend.

The day started with wonderful performances in the Gala Organ Recital by Carleton Etherington, Jonathan Lilley and Darius Battiwalla, who all worked closely with Simon during his tenure as Master of the Music at the Minster.

This was followed by a fun afternoon Come and Sing rehearsal, where we welcomed over a hundred singers to join us, many of whom had previously sung under Simon’s direction and knew him well.

The day culminated in a fantastic concert, filled with music that Simon loved, and featuring his friends Maggie McDonald and David Greed as guest soloists, with incredibly moving performances of Erbarme Dich by JS Bach and Vaughan Williams’ the Lark Ascending.

The Come and Sing Choir and St Peter’s Singers joined forces for Elgar’s The Angel’s Farewell from Dream of Gerontius, with Maggie again providing the beautiful mezzo soprano solo. This was then followed by a joyous end to the evening, with Messiah Part I and the stirring Hallelujah chorus- accompanied by Lee Ward on the organ, featuring soloists from St Peter’s Singers, and trumpets and timpani from Yorkshire Evening Post Brass.

It really was a wonderful occasion and a fitting tribute to Simon, who was known and loved by so many. Thank you to all of you who joined us to perform, or as part of the audience, and to all those behind the scenes who made the day run smoothly. With thanks to @the_caterer_leeds for their excellent spread too!

We hope you all enjoyed your day with us too- can you spot yourself? 👀

If you’re already looking for what concert to book next, why not join St Peter’s Singers back at Leeds Minster on Saturday 22 November at 7:30pm for a performance of JS Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (Parts I-III)? We’re collaborating with 18th Century Sinfonia period instrument ensemble for this concert, and it’s set to be an evening of glorious music for the Christmas season, with stunning trumpet fanfares, tender lullabies and a moment of pastoral tranquillity.
