SUMMARY:Mass in B Minor
DESCRIPTION:J S Bach\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook Now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCome and hear JS Bach’s amazing Mass in B Minor – live! \n\n\n\nTwo hours of the deepest\, most satisfying and joyful music for choir and orchestra you may ever hear – the supreme legacy to us of the greatest composer of the Baroque period\, some would say of all time. \n\n\n\nWhether it’s the thrill of the high Baroque trumpets\, the sense of timeless mystery\, the singing\, or the searing intensity of the final plea for peace\, this amazing music is sure to move you\, maybe profoundly! \n\n\n\nThe beauty of Leeds Minster’s spacious surroundings makes this the perfect opportunity to experience the astonishing power of this sacred masterpiece. \n\n\n\nAlexander Woodrow conducts the St Peter’s Singers and National Festival Orchestra (leader Sally Robinson) \n\n\n\nThis performance forms our annual presentation of Music for Good Friday. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSt Peter’s Singers are passionate about the music we sing and want to share it with as many people as possible. We will do all we can to make anyone who comes to our concerts feel welcome and at ease. So if you’ve not tried this music out before\, why not come along and bring a friend? Leeds Minster is an accessible venue with good facilities. Everyone is welcome. What to expect at a St Peter’s Singers concert. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRuby HendrysopranoLucy AppleyardmezzoJoanna GamblecontraltoToby WardtenorQuentin Brownbass-baritone\n\n\n\nSt Peter’s Singers\n\n\n\nNational Festival Orchestra\n\n\n\nSally Robinson leader \n\n\n\nAlexander Woodrow conductor\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook Now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Mass in B Minor\n\n\n\nThe Mass in B Minor is a musical setting of the Latin words of the Western Church’s Mass. It begins powerfully in the Key of B Minor\, but visits many other Keys as it explores and illuminates the meaning and significance of each word and phrase throughout the two hours that it takes to perform. \n\n\n\nIt is performed by Choir and Orchestra\, with instrumental and vocal soloists in various combinations providing contrasting moments of more personal and intimate expression between the big climaxes and collective utterances. The high-pitched piccolo trumpets\, deployed with all of Bach’s genius\, add an ecstatic thrill to the mix. \n\n\n\nBach created the work partially using and adapting music he had already written for other works and occasions. His intention may have been to use it as a means of obtaining new employment\, and remarkably\, it is almost certain he never had the privilege which we now enjoy of hearing the work in its entirety. It remains one of the towering masterpieces of Western culture. \n\n\n\nThe performance will consist of two parts\, lasting about an hour each\, with an interval in-between\, during which tea and coffee will be served. A translation of the Latin text will be available at the performance\, or you can access the programme notes online. Seating will be on a first come\, first served basis. Dress is informal. Doors open at 6.20pm\, and the performance will finish at about 9.30pm. \n\n\n\nProgramme Notes \n\n\n\nAccess and Accessibility\n\n\n\nLeeds Minster is about 5 minutes walk from Leeds Bus Station\, and about 15 minutes walk from Leeds Railway Station. There is on-street parking on the side streets nearby\, as well as the NCP Markets carpark (5 minutes) and the John Lewis carpark (10 minutes). \n\n\n\nThere is ramp access to the main doors beneath the tower\, with entrance to the grounds at the West End by the Lamb and Flag pub recommended to avoid the steps up from the street level. Once inside there there is step-free access to the concert seating and to the City of Leeds Room for refreshments and toilets. Wheelchairs and mobility devices are welcome and can be accommodated. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSt Peter’s Singers gratefully acknowledge the generous support of \n\n\n\nThe Friends of the Music of Leeds Minster \n\n\n\nSt Peter’s Singers’ presentation of Music for Good Friday is an annual event\, given by kind permission of Leeds Minster. It provides an opportunity to hear one of the great works of the sacred Oratorio repertoire in a context that a concert hall performance on a Saturday evening cannot provide\, and at a price that more people can afford. \n\n\n\nPast works receiving performance include: \n\n\n\n\nBach’s St John Passion\n\n\n\nBach’s B Minor Mass\n\n\n\nHandel’s Messiah \n\n\n\nBrahms’ German Requiem\n\n\n\nDvorak’s Stabat Mater\n\n\n\nHaydn’s Stabat Mater\n\n\n\nScarlatti’s Stabat Mater\n\n\n\nOglesby’s Penthos

SUMMARY:Visions of Darkness and Light
DESCRIPTION:Choral music by Dove\, MacMillan\, Lindley and Langlais\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us at Leeds Cathedral for a lunchtime recital of varied and mostly contemporary choral and organ music\, inspired by Visions of Darkness and Light. \n\n\n\nThe programme features the first performance of a new work by our former Conductor Dr Simon Lindley\, and the first Leeds performance of James MacMillan’s Miserere mei. \n\n\n\nWith three of the works composed in the last 15 years\, this programme shows the tradition of sacred choral music to be not just alive\, but in rude health\, with composers continuing to draw inspiration from ancient texts. \n\n\n\nAlexander Woodrow directs\, with Darius Battiwalla at the organ. \n\n\n\n\n\nRead the Programme Notes\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nVast Ocean of LightJonathan DoveA Taylor TrilogySimon LindleyMiserere meiJames MacMillanMesse SolennelleJean Langlais\n\n\n\nDr Lindley’s work A Taylor Trilogy features the composer’s selection from the relatively unknown writings of the 17th century divine Jeremy Taylor (1613-1667)\, thought by some to be one of the greatest writers of prose in our language. It opens with a vision of glorious sunlight greeting the resurrection of Christ. The work was commissioned by St Peter’s Singers and receives its first performance here to mark the 50th anniversary of Dr Lindley’s arrival in Leeds. \n\n\n\nJonathan Dove also returns to the 17th century\, setting a text by another fine poet\, Phineas Fletcher (1582-1650). Like many of his contemporaries\, Fletcher too draws on the imagery of Light\, which is reflected in Dove’s luminous writing for the organ. \n\n\n\nJames MacMillan takes Psalm 51 (Miserere mei\, Dei – Have mercy on me O God) – a seminal\, and much darker text with a rich history of choral settings. Typically\, he adds another profound chapter to this story\, which we’re proud to bring to Leeds for the first time in the work’s history. \n\n\n\nThe recital ends with movements from Jean Langlais’ ebullient Messe Solennelle\, notable for the dynamic and discordant splashes of organ sound that punctuate the singing. \n\n\n\n\nRead the Programme Notes\n\n\n\n\nSt Peter’s Singers\n\n\n\nDarius Battiwalla organ\n\n\n\nAlexander Woodrow conductor\n\n\n\nThis concert is promoted and provided free of charge by Leeds Leisure Services as part of the International Concert Season. St Peter’s Singers are grateful for the invitation to take part.

DESCRIPTION:Leeds Minster \n\n\n\n\nBook now\n\n\n\n\n\n\nmusical masterpieces from an elegant era \n\n\n\nwith period-instrument ensemble Manchester Baroque\n\n\n\n\nThis programme of glorious 18th-century Baroque music is sure to raise the spirits. \n\n\n\nBach\, Handel\, Corelli\, Scarlatti and Buxtehude each get to strut their stuff\, displaying all the beauty\, grace and emotional depth for which this period’s music is known. \n\n\n\nAnd we’re delighted to welcome Manchester Baroque who will bring their period instruments and historically-informed performance skills to make this concert truly a delight and one to remember. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgramme \n\n\n\nMagnificatattrib. The Magnificat\, often attributed to Buxtehude but without good evidence\, actually bears many of the hallmarks of Franco-Italian composers such as Carissimi and Lully\, and has a pleasant lilting style. \n\n\n\nThe Miserere by Francesco Scarlatti (brother of Alessandro and Uncle of Domenico) is a fine and under-rated work\, a suitably plangent setting of Psalm 51 strongly characterised by the affecting musical vocabulary of the time. St Peter’s Singers performed it in 2022 under post-Covid austerity measures and are pleased to revisit it with proper orchestral involvement\, not least because orchestral performances in the UK seem to be vanishingly rare. \n\n\n\nCorelli’s 12 Concerti Grossi Op 6\, which feature a concerted group of soloists within a small instrumental ensemble\, became hugely popular after their eventual publication in 1714\, some thirty years after their composition. Handel was among many composers to copy and adopt the form\, publishing in 1739 his own ”Opus 6′ set of 12 in honour of Corelli. \n\n\n\nJesu meine Freude is the most complex of Bach’s Motets\, being an elaboration of a well-known Lutheran hymn and demonstrating a wide range of compositional techniques\, possibly with an educational purpose in mind. Yet for all the density of the musical thought and the serious engagement with the text\, this is a joyful and uplifting work. \n\n\n\nComposed in 1707 when the precocious and highly ambitious 22-year old Handel had just arrived in Rome\, Dixit Dominus is a formidable tour-de-force from a composer who now found himself with access to some of the best musicians in Europe. Exhilarating for both performers and listeners alike\, this work will provide a fine ending to this concert. \n\n\n\nSince their launch in 2019\, Manchester Baroque has built a reputation for engaging and vibrant performances of historical music on period instruments. Through concerts of chamber music\, larger scale orchestral works and oratorios\, Manchester Baroque is committed to the continued development of historically informed performances. They are normally to be heard in Manchester\, so we welcome them to Leeds and are thrilled to make their work available to Yorkshire audiences. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook now\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility: Leeds Minster is about 5 minutes walk from Leeds Bus Station\, and about 15 minutes walk from Leeds Railway Station. There is on-street parking on the side streets nearby\, as well as the NCP Markets carpark ( 5 minutes) and the John Lewis carpark (10 minutes). \n\n\n\nThere is ramp access to the main doors beneath the tower\, with entrance to the grounds at the West End by the Lamb and Flag pub recommended to avoid the steps up from the street level. Once inside there there is step-free access to the nave and to the City of Leeds Room for refreshments and toilets.

SUMMARY:St John Passion
DESCRIPTION:Leeds Minster \n\n\n\nJS Bach’s peerless music retells the story of the death of Jesus Christ.\n\n\n\n\nBook now\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSt John Passion\n\n\n\nJS Bach\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFirst performed 300 years ago on Good Friday 1724\, Bach’s St John Passion sets to music St John’s account of the events leading up to Christ’s death. Even now it remains an acknowledged masterpiece\, performed hundreds of times each year all over the world. \n\n\n\nWhat is the St John Passion ? \n\n\n\nIt is at times highly dramatic\, turbulent and emotional\, while soothing\, reflective\, grief-stricken at others. The choir switches roles between the mob calling for Jesus’ death and the Christian community throughout the ages observing and reliving the horror of those events. The soloists too act out the parts of the main characters while giving voice to the thoughts and feelings of bystanders such as ourselves. \n\n\n\nAs ever\, Bach’s music touches knowingly on our deepest and most complex emotions: love\, betrayal\, guilt\, grief. Despite coming from what seems like another world\, this work can still speak to us – moving\, fulfilling and uplifting. Step into that world – and find yourself more truly and deeply present in this one. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe concert will finish at about 9.15pm. Tea and coffee will be served during the interval. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nToby Ward Evangelist\n\n\n\nPhil Wilcox Christus\n\n\n\nColette Howarth\, Heather Pennwood\, Constanze Hartley\, Joanna Shiels\, Peter Condry \n\n\n\nChristopher Trenholme\, Scott Pennwood\, Quentin Brown\n\n\n\nSt Peter’s Singers\n\n\n\nNational Festival Orchestra leader Sally Robinson\n\n\n\nShaun Turnbull continuo\n\n\n\nAlex Woodrow Conductor\n\n\n\n\nBook now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nToby Ward\, Evangelist (Narrator)\, hails from Otley and started his musical life as a boy chorister at Leeds Parish Church (as Leeds Minster then was). \n\n\n\nHe then progressed via a Choral Scholarship at Gloucester Cathedral to a Tenor Choral Scholarship in the world-famous choir of Kings College\, Cambridge\, and then to the Royal College of Music. \n\n\n\nHe founded and directs the acclaimed early music group Ensemble Pro Victoria\, and divides the rest of his professional time between singing\, work as an organist and continuo player\, and leading outreach workshops with young singers. \n\n\n\nphoto: Nick Rutter \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPhil Wilcox\, Christus\, is well-known in West Yorkshire\, having studied at Leeds Conservatoire\, sung in the Bradford Cathedral Choir and St Peter’s Singers\, and worked in many schools. \n\n\n\nFollowing further studies at the Royal Academy\, Phil has developed a wide and varied work portfolio\, singing Oratorio\, Opera for companies including English Touring Opera and Grange Park Opera\, and as a chorister for Opera North and the BBC Singers. \n\n\n\nPhil is very proud of his continuing outreach work as Learning and Participation Manager for Leeds Lieder\, and he conducts a number of choirs for Music in the Office. SUMMARY:Songs of Serenity and Peace
DESCRIPTION:Spiritual music for choir and organ from around the British Isles\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSt. Anne’s Cathedral\, Cookridge St\, LS2 8BE \n\n\n\n1.15pm\, free admission \n\n\n\nThis programme of music for Choir and Organ starts in joyful and upbeat mood. It then transitions through expressions of both inward and outward turbulence to that sense of serenity and peace which maybe only music can invoke. A spiritual oasis during the working day! \n\n\n\nThe concert will last about 50 minutes. \n\n\n\n\nProgramme \n\n\n\nO Sing unto the LordJames MacMillanLet the people praise thee O GodWilliam MathiasFor lo\, I raise upCharles Villiers StanfordNunc DimittisGustav HolstLike as the hart desireth the waterbrooksHerbert HowellsLo\, the full final sacrificeGerald Finzi\n\n\n\nSt Peter’s Singers\n\n\n\nLee Ward organ\n\n\n\nAlexander Woodrow Conductor\n\n\n\nThis programme draws on music from all four corners of the British Isles (Stanford’s anthem being composed in Dublin in 1914\, although not published until 1939). MacMillan and Mathias\, Scottish and Welsh respectively\, set Psalm texts in upbeat and joyful mood. Stanford’s extraordinary setting of the prophet Habbakuk invokes the turbulence and upheaval brought by men of war before finding his way – via every choirboy’s favourite solo line ‘I will stand upon my watch’ – to a vision of serene hope. Howells’ and Holst’s works express that longing of the soul for inner peace\, a theme developed and expressed in more florid language by Richard Crashaw\, a poet in the Metaphysical tradition of John Donne and Thomas Traherne. As with so many English poets\, Finzi demonstrates his extraordinary feel for this text\, while the final ‘Amen’ won a recent light-hearted vote on Twitter for the best musical setting of the word… \n\n\n\nThis concert if promoted and provided free of charge by Leeds Leisure Services as part of the International Concert Season. St Peter’s Singers are grateful for the invitation to take part.

SUMMARY:Music for Good Friday: Penthos
DESCRIPTION:A new Requiem\n\n\n\nThe second performance of this visionary new work\n\n\n\ncreated and first performed in Leeds in 2018\n\n\n\n\nPenthos is a work for Choir\, Orchestra\, Organ and Soloists that combines high-quality music and poetry\, and lasts nearly an hour. \n\n\n\nIt takes the form of the traditional Requiem Mass\, but with new words exploring themes of reconciliation and forgiveness\, and music that reaches beyond the words to speak to – and affirm – our deepest human longings. \n\n\n\n\n\n“Put quite simply\, it is a work of depth\, maturity\, power\, beauty and sheer brilliance\, whose qualities are revealing themselves week by week in rehearsal.” \nAlex Woodrow\, Conductor\, St Peter’s Singers\n\n\n\n\n“So it is locally written and locally performed\, but trust me it will sound to you as if it has existed as a core of choral music for centuries. It is that good.” \nRichard Pascoe\, Member of St Peter’s Singers\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n“A striking quality of the auspicious premiere … was the communicative power of the Penthos Requiem to connect with the listener” \nGeoffrey Mogridge on Penthos in The Wharfedale Observer\n\n\n\nFor those who were present\, the first performance of Penthos in October 2018 was something they are unlikely to forget: Matthew Oglesby’s powerful music adding further imaginative and emotional depth to Hannah Stone’s visionary poetry. \n\n\n\nThe pandemic forced the postponement of the second performance\, planned for April 2020\, but we were determined that there should be another opportunity to hear this superb work. \n\n\n\nIf you couldn’t get to that first performance in 2018\, or you would like to hear it again… this is your chance\, not to be missed! \n\n\n\nHannah Stone and Matthew Oglesby live in or around Leeds. They are members of St Peter’s Singers and highly active in Leeds’ cultural life. \n\n\n\nFind out more about Penthos… \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nPenthos\n\n\n\nHannah Stone and Matthew Oglesby\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSt Peter’s Singers \n\n\n\nLucy Appleyard contralto \n\n\n\nQuentin Brown bass \n\n\n\nWilliam Campbell organ \n\n\n\nNational Festival Orchestra \n\n\n\nSally Robinson leader \n\n\n\nAlexander Woodrow conductor \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nSt Peter’s Singers gratefully acknowledge the generous support of \n\n\n\nThe Liz and Terry Bramall Foundation \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Friends of the Music of Leeds Minster \n\n\n\nSt Peter’s Singers’ presentation of Music for Good Friday is an annual event\, given by kind permission of Leeds Minster. You can experience the thrill of hearing all 70 voices singing together in works such as Rheinberger’s glorious Mass in E flat\, but also enjoy the contrasts of each choir singing on their own. \n\n\n\nThe programme includes a broad range of choral music ranging from the early German music of Schütz and Buxtehude through Romantic works by Mendelssohn\, Rheinberger and Rachmaninoff to more modern works by Schnittke and Arvo Pärt. \n\n\n\nThe concert takes place in the beautful setting of Leeds Minster at 4pm on Saturday 11 February\, and will last about an hour. DESCRIPTION:Vaughan Williams and the soul of English music\n\n\n\nLeeds Minster LS2 7DJ\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis celebration of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ choral music\, given in honour of his 150th anniversary\, explores some of the colours and sounds of what we now recognize as the greatest and most authentic voice of English music to emerge after the Great War. \n\n\n\nThe programme encompasses both folksong and some of his most sublime spiritual outpourings. \n\n\n\nThe concert will last about an hour and a half\, including an interval\, during which refreshments will be served. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nCoelos ascendit hodieCharles Villiers StanfordJustorum AnimaeCharles Villiers StanfordBeati quorum viaCharles Villiers StanfordThere is an old beliefHubert ParryO taste and seeRalph Vaughan WilliamsO Clap your handsRalph Vaughan WilliamsMass in G MinorRalph Vaughan WilliamsIntervalThe Turtle DoveRalph Vaughan WilliamsLinden LeaRalph Vaughan WilliamsReconciliation (from Dona nobis pacem)Ralph Vaughan WilliamsNunc dimittisGustav HolstLord\, thou has been our refugeRalph Vaughan Williams\n\n\n\n\nVaughan Williams was a man of contradictions\, not least as an agnostic with a profound sense and desire for the spiritual. He found his voice as he sought out\, preserved and assimilated the folksongs of England\, finding in them a simplicity of musical expression a world away from the music of Empire\, and then transforming that material into profound high art\, capable of speaking to and for a nation in a way his Edwardian predecessors no longer could. \n\n\n\nOur programme showcases the influences of his teachers Parry and Stanford which he absorbed but gradually left behind. It includes some of his folksong arrangements\, and some of his finest spiritual music – the Mass in G Minor\, first performed 100 years ago almost to the day\, and the anthem O God our help in ages past. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSt Peter’s Singers \n\n\n\nDavid Grealy – organ \n\n\n\nAlexander Woodrow Director

DESCRIPTION:Music from the Minsters of Leeds and York\n\n\n\nLeeds Minster LS2 7DJ\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMoving\, spiritual music by the late Dr Francis Jackson\, Sir Edward Bairstow and Philip Moore celebrating the connection between the Minsters of Leeds and York. \n\n\n\nDr Francis Jackson\n\n\n\nThis concert is given in tribute to Dr Francis Jackson\, who passed away early this year\, aged 104. \n\n\n\nIt will last about 90 minutes\, including an interval\, during which refreshments will be served. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nBenediciteFrancis JacksonMagnificat in GFrancis JacksonNunc dimittis in GFrancis JacksonAll wisdom cometh from the LordPhilip MooreStabat MaterFrancis JacksonIntervalLet all mortal flesh keep silenceEdward BairstowI sat down under his shadowEdward BairstowEvening HymnFrancis JacksonTu es PetrusPhilip MooreFrom Earth to HeavenPhilip Moore\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeeds Minster has been fortunate to enjoy a long-established musical relationship with York Minster\, going back to the time that Sir Edward Bairstow moved from Leeds to York in 1913 to take up the position of Organist and Director of Music\, a post he held until his death in 1946. \n\n\n\nDuring his tenure Bairstow oversaw the development of Francis Jackson from chorister to assistant organist\, with Jackson eventually succeeding him at the tender age of 28. Dr Jackson held the post until his retirement in 1982 and was succeeded by Philip Moore who in turn stayed until 2008\, completing a span of 95 years’ occupation of the post between them. \n\n\n\nAll three wrote music for choirs based at Leeds Minster (then Leeds Parish Church)\, with Jackson and Moore completing commissions for both the Choir of Leeds Parish Church and St Peter’s Singers as their relationships with the choirs and their Director Dr Simon Lindley developed. Today’s recital celebrates these connections as we pay special homage to Dr Jackson. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgramme notes\n\n\n\nThe recital opens with Bairstow’s internationally-renowned Motet Let all mortal flesh keep silence\, written for the choir of Leeds Parish Church in 1906\, and recorded by St Peter’s Singers in 2014. \n\n\n\nFrom Jackson’s pen come his much-loved Benedicite (which featured in this summer’s Platinum Jubilee service at St Paul’s)\, and Evening Service in G (‘Me in G’ as he called it). If the haunting Nunc Dimittis (‘Lord\, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace’) suggests a willingness to dwell on what may greet all of us one day\, then the stunning harmonies of Evening Hymn suggest both vision and confidence on that front. The programme also affords a rare chance to hear his Stabat Mater\, composed for St Peter’s Singers’ 20th anniversary in 1997. \n\n\n\nPhilip Moore’s music is represented by his haunting anthem All wisdom cometh from the Lord\, by his rumbustious setting of the text Tu es Petrus (‘You are Peter\, and on this rock I will build my church’)\, composed for the 40th anniversary of St Peter’s Singers in 2017\, and finally by From earth to heaven. This was commissioned by Leeds Parish Church in 1997 for the dedication of the magnificent Sally Scott window that depicts Jacob’s Ladder over the entrance to the Minster’s Nave – we are thrilled to welcome the University of York Brass Ensemble and the choir of Abbey Grange Academy to join us in this fabulous work. \n\n\n\nSt Peter’s Singers \n\n\n\nUniversity of York Brass Ensemble \n\n\n\nChoir of Abbey Grange Academy \n\n\n\nWilliam Campbell Organ \n\n\n\nAlexander Woodrow Director

There’s a nod to the Queen’s Jubilee with two of Handel’s Coronation Anthems and Parry’s I was glad\, together with three of his beautiful Songs of Farewell. Rheinberger’s Abendlied (Evening Hymn) brings a more reflective mood\, while James Macmillan’s Lux aeterna allows us to briefly revisit our Songs of Solace recital last October and remember those lost in the pandemic. \n\n\n\nAfter an interval\, two of Poulenc’s short Motets take us briefly to the very different sound world of twentieth century French spiritual music\, before we switch to a more relaxed set of secular part songs\, including the well-known Linden Lea by Vaughan Williams and Stanford’s gorgeous The Blue Bird. This group finishes with Weaver Bird\, a short composition by our in-house duo poet Hannah Stone and composer Matthew Oglesby. \n\n\n\nWe finish\, fittingly for a choir with our name\, with two settings of the text Tu es Petrus (‘You are Peter’)\, one by the 16th century master Palestrina\, and the other composed for our 40th anniversary in 2017 by Philip Moore\, formerly Organist of York Minster. \n\n\n\nAnthony Gray plays the organ and Alex Woodrow directs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHG3 5LQ

Although it properly belongs to the previous day\, its penitential nature makes it an entirely suitable response to the crucifixion of Christ. So the programme includes both the plainchant setting by Allegri and Francesco Scarlatti’s more elaborate version from the Baroque age. \n\n\n\nThe medieval poem Stabat Mater Dolorosa (‘The grieving mother stood weeping while her son hung on the cross’) has been set to music countless times. This setting\, by Domenico Scarlatti\, exploits all the richness of expression afforded by ten vocal parts and is one of the classics of the Baroque period. \n\n\n\nThe programme is completed by Antonio Lotti’s famous 8-part setting of the text Crucifixus est prop nobis (‘He was crucified for us’). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeeds Minster – access\n\n\n\nPublic parking is available on the street and in the car park opposite the Palace Hotel at the eastern end of Leeds Minster. The music and texts exude a warm and sympathetic glow and somehow draw our attention above all else to the humanity of its subject. Feel-good music\, that has been sorely missed. \n\n\n\nAlex Woodrow directs St Peter’s Singers and a stellar lineup of (mostly) young soloists. Tom Moore accompanies on the Minster’s fabulous Harrison organ. \n\n\n\nSt Peter’s Singers are proud to present the first major performance of the work in Leeds since the pandemic started. What better way is there to start your preparations for Christmas ? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeeds Minster – access and Covid security\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLeeds Minster is a large and seemingly well-ventilated building\, with sufficient room for you to space out as you wish.
